Why do cats like the sun?

Every purr loves to lie by the window during cold days. Cats are animals that love the sun’s rays. Why is it like that? What are cats guided by and why do they love the sun so much? Today’s article answers these questions.

Why is the cat constantly looking for the sun?

When the temperature in the room where the cat is staying is low, then cats look for an additional source of warmth. As a reminder, the temperature in cats oscillates around 38-39 o C. On the other hand, in rooms, the appropriate temperature at which a person feels comfortable is around 21 o C. Such a difference makes cats look for an extra dose of warmth. Therefore, as long as the weather is beautiful and the sun’s rays penetrate the window, then cats willingly locate themselves in sunny places.

A cat’s sleep and the sun’s rays

Cats spend an average of 20 hours a day sleeping. The body temperature during sleep is lowered. It is caused by a reduced heart rate in the living organism. Therefore, cats need an additional source of heat to keep their bodies warm while sleeping. The sun’s rays provide them with great comfort and continuous irradiation, which allows them to maintain the temperature at the right level.

How do cats keep warm?

Lying down and soaking up the sun is one of the many ways your cat can keep their bodies warm. In addition, cats often keep warm by:

  • lying on a laptop,
  • lying on radiators,
  • snuggled up in a blanket or pillow,
  • they lie on the sofa and cupboards that are hung above,
  • stay near the fireplace.

Cats are animals that are constantly looking for warmth. However, when we have a cat that goes outside freely, then let’s try to check the hood under the car, because it is a favorite hiding place for cats that gives a lot of warmth.

It is worth noting that cats do not always keep warm. On hot days or when the ambient temperature is too high, then cats look for places where they can cool down. You can read more about cat cooling in the article: “How cats cool down”.
