Why does the cat pee on the bed?

Why does the cat pee on the bed?

Urinating your cat outside the litter box is a problem that can be difficult to solve. Cat peeing on the bed, armchair, in places outside the litter box can have many causes. Certainly, as a guardian, we shouldn’t blame the cat for doing this on purpose. This cat behavior may indicate a health or behavioral problem. When the problem increases, it is worth turning to a specialist. In this case, a veterinarian.

Health problems and peeing on the bed

Health problems are among the most common causes of peeing on the bed and pooping outside the litter box. Cats suffering from diseases of the excretory system may often pee outside the litter box, including on the bed. In addition, inflammation of the excretory system, e.g. during cystitis, may be accompanied by hematuria. In this case, you should immediately go to the veterinarian to examine the urine and select the appropriate treatment.

The most common diseases of the excretory system include:

  • cystitis (idiopathic, bacterial),
  • urolithiasis,
  • urinary obstruction,
  • kidney problems,

In addition, problems of the reproductive system can also be mentioned. Here come problems such as:

  • inflammation and enlargement of the prostate in males,
  • the presence of cysts in the reproductive system,
  • inflammation of the uterus,
  • cancers.

Behavioral problems and peeing outside the litter box
Another reason for peeing outside the litter box, including on the bed, are behavioral problems. Most often, cats pee outside their litter box when they feel scared, nervous or lonely. In this case, we have to assess the situation ourselves and analyze:

  • Have there been any stressful situations at home recently that could have affected the cat, e.g. renovation?
  • Is there a new pet in the house?
  • Has a new person moved in?

In fact, there can be many behavioral causes. The guardian must analyze what could have put the cat in a state of stress and try to eliminate it.

Little kitten problems

If we have a small kitten that pees on the bed and outside the litter box, it is a sign that he has not been trained to use the litter box. Therefore, you should make sure that you teach and reward your toddler for going to the litter box several times a day. You can read more about learning to use the litter box in the article How to teach a cat to use the litter box? What to do when the cat pees on the bed?

First, you need to diagnose what the problem is. If your cat is sick, contact your veterinarian. The veterinarian should thoroughly examine the cat and choose the appropriate treatment.

If peeing on the bed is behavioral, the first thing we should do is remove the cat’s stress factor. If the cat suffers from loneliness, let’s spend more time with him or adopt a new cat.

If the cat pees on the bed constantly in the same place, the contaminated material should be thoroughly washed. In addition, a great solution is to spray the place with a special repellent or lemon. If, after thorough cleaning, the cat still pees on the bed, we can try giving him food on the bed. Cats go to great lengths to keep the places where they eat clean. Therefore, feeding your cat in an area where you don’t want him to pee can be a quick fix to the problem.
